Cybersecurity trends for 2025: priorities and risks to be aware of

Artificial intelligence concept

2024 has just stepped out of the door and, with it, some of the worst hacks and data breaches in history. The Salt Typhoon Campaign, the Snowflake Data Breach, the Change Healthcare Ransomware Attack, the Midnight Blizzard’s Microsoft Breach, and the North Korean Cryptocurrency Theft are only some worth mentioning. Social media security is also at the forefront of public debate, with the US TikTok ban set to take effect on January 19 (pending a Supreme Court decision). So what should we expect in 2025?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Cyber Threats and Defense

Cybercriminals increasingly leverage AI to craft sophisticated phishing schemes, deepfake impersonations, and automated attacks. Conversely, cybersecurity professionals are adopting AI to enhance threat detection, automate responses, and bolster defences. This trend is set to continue in 2025, with AI becoming both an ally and an enemy of cybersecurity.

Proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) Devices

The rapid expansion of IoT devices introduces numerous vulnerabilities, as each connected device can serve as a potential entry point for cyberattacks. Therefore, ensuring robust security measures for these devices is becoming increasingly critical.

Zero Trust Security Models

The adoption of Zero-Trust architectures, which operate on the principle of verifying every user and device regardless of their location, is on the rise. This approach aims to mitigate risks associated with both internal and external threats. However, due to its very nature, this model is also challenging to achieve, and many organizations are looking for an alternative, less resource-intensive model.

Quantum Computing Threats

The advancement of quantum computing poses potential risks to current encryption standards. Organizations must prepare for a future where quantum capabilities could render traditional cryptographic methods obsolete.

Ransomware Evolution

According to Splunk, ransomware attacks are expected to increase in frequency and sophistication, with attackers employing more professionalized tactics. Implementing comprehensive backup strategies and employee training are key defences against such threats.

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

Attacks targeting supply chains are becoming more prevalent. Adversaries exploit vulnerabilities in third-party services and software to infiltrate organizations. Strengthening supply chain security is essential to counter these threats.

Regulatory Developments

With the growing integration of AI and other technologies, mounting pressure exists to establish regulations and guidelines to ensure their safe and ethical use. This is impacting how organizations implement and manage cybersecurity measures. At the same time, laws are also changing regarding issues related to social media security, from minor safety to data protection.

Staying informed about these trends and proactively enhancing security measures are crucial steps for organizations to safeguard their digital assets in the 2025 cybersecurity landscape. Follow our blog to stay informed and aware of what’s important for your safety!
